A cyclist leaves his training base for a morning workout, riding at the rate of 10 mph. One and one-half hours later, his support staff leaves the base in a car going 25 mph in the same direction. How long will it take the support staff to catch up with the cyclist?
--------
Cyslist DATA:
rate = 10 mph ; time = x hrs ; distance = r*t = 10x miles
----------
Staff DATA:
rate = 25 mph ; time = x - (3/2) hrs ; distance = 25(x-(3/2)) miles
-------
Equation:
10x = 25x - 25(3/2)
-------
-15x = (-75/2)
-------
x = 5/2 hrs
-----
Staff time = x-(3/2) = (5/2)-(3/2) = 1 hr. (time for the staff
to overtake the cyclist.
