At 3PM a plane leaves London to fly to Madrid at 1260 km away. At 4PM, a second plane leaves Madrid to fly to London going 40 km faster than the first plane. The two planes pass each other at 4:30 PM. What is the speed of each plane?
Speed of London Madrid plane =x
starts at3 PM
meets oncoming plane at 4.30 PM
time = traveled = 1.5 hours.
distance traveled = 1.5x

speed of Madrid London plane = x+ 40 km/h
It leaves 1 hour late
So it meets the oncoming plane in 1/2 hour
distance traveled = 0.5*(x+40)
1.5x+0.5x+20=1260
2x=1240
x=620 km/h speed of London Madrid plane
620+40 = 660 km/h speed of Madrid London Plane
