Question 766707: Along a road, spot X and spot Y are 1150m apart. Ann walks along the road from X to Y at 2/3 m/s. Yohan walks along the same road from Y to X at 1.25m/s. both start walking at the same time.
A) how many mins later will they meet ?
B) how far is their meeting point from X?

Answer by josgarithmetic(39616)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
They meet when the sum of their walked distances equals 1150m.
Their time spent walking is the same because they begin their walks toward each other at the time starting time, and keep walking until meeting. Call this time, x.

Person_________speed_________time_________distance
Ann____________2/3___________(_x_)________(___)
Yohan__________1.25__________(_x_)________(___)
Total_____________________________________1150

The two expressions for the unknown distances are based on r*t=d using r for rate, t for time, d for distance.

Person_________speed_________time_________distance
Ann____________2/3___________(_x_)________((2/3)x)
Yohan__________1.25__________(_x_)________(1.25x)
Total_____________________________________1150

We can first find the time, x, in seconds using sum of the distances equation:

seconds
This is also 10 minutes.______ minutes.

COMPUTING DISTANCES:
Ann walked meters
Simply by difference, Yohan walked meters
