Question 756085: Two bicyclists are 25 mi apart and are traveling toward each other. One cyclist is traveling at 2/3 the rate of the other cyclist. They pass in 2hrs. Find the rate of each cyclist?
Answer by htmentor(1343)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let s = the speed of the faster cyclist
Then 2/3s = the speed of the other cyclist
Since they are moving toward one another their RELATIVE speed = s + 2/3s =5/3s
If they pass each other in 2 hrs, their relative speed = 25 mi/2h = 12.5 mi/h
Solve for s:
(5/3)s = 12.5 -> s = 7.5
So their speeds are 7.5 mi/h and 5 mi/h
