Question 740935: the gasoline mileage y (in miles per gallon) of a small economy car is related to the velocity v (in miles per hour) by the formula y= -(1/30)v^2 + 2.5v. What is the most economical speed for a long trip? It gives me a graph of some sort with units spaced evenly from 10 to 40, by a factor of 10, on the y-axis and 10 to 70, also by a factor of 10, on the x-axis. I believe that Velocity is the independent variable therefore going on the y-axis and gas mileage is dependent taking up the x-axis. The graph itself is a parabola but I don't necessarily understand what the question is asking me to find. What quantifies a long trip and such. Thanks.

Plot v (velocity) along the x axis and y (mileage in miles per gallon) along the y axis. This way, you will see that greatest mileage is related to a certain velocity.....usually around 55 mph velocity :-)
