In 1.25 hours more time Rita riding her bicycle at 12 miles per hour rode 2 miles farther than Sonya who was riding her bicycle at 16 miles per hour how long did each girl ride
:
Let t = riding time of Sonya, who rode at 16 mph
then
(t+1.25) = riding time of Rita, who rode a 12 mph
:
Write a distance equation; dist = speed * time
:
R's dist - S's dist = 2 mi
12(t+1.25) - 16t = 2
12t + 15 - 16t = 2
12t - 16t = 2 - 15
-4t = -13
t = -13/-4
t = +3.25 hrs, Sonya's riding time
then
3.25 + 1.25 = 4.5 hrs riding time of Rita
:
:
Check this out by finding the actual distance each girl rode.
12 * 4.5 = 54 mi
16 *3.25 = 52 mi, a difference of two miles
