I am having trouble understanding when to write out (x-2) and (2-x). I was overlooking some distance rate time word problems and I had two equations almost alike except the solution to one was different from other. Basically the two equations start out with the first object/person/thing moving slower, but started before second, then the second object/person/thing moving faster to catch up to the first but the second object/person/thing leave two hours later in order to catch up with first. I'm just confused as how to write my equation out in questions like this. Please help with advice. Maybe some hints I can look for in the words that mean to write it out that way. ex. less than (-), is (=), quotient (/), product (*).

If the two objects are moving the same direction you need to know mthe difference in the two speeds to find the overtake time.
If the two objects are moving apart and you want to know how long before they are so far apart, total the two speeds.
