Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
It takes a Kayak 1 1/2 hours to go 24 miles downstream and 4 hours
to return.
Find the speed of the current and the speed of the kayak in still water
:
let s = speed in still water
let c = speed of the current
:
Write distance equation for each way
1.5(s+c) = 24
4.0(s-c) = 24
Simplify both, divide the 1st by 1.5, the 2nd by 4, resulting in
s + c = 16
s - c = 6
-------------addition eliminates c, find s
2s = 22
s = 11 mph in still water
:
I'll let you find the speed of the current
check your solutions in both equations
