Space Shuttle 2 takes off 0.5 hour after Shuttle 1 takes off. If Shuttle 2 travels at 300 mph faster than Shuttle 1 and overtakes Shuttle 1 exactly 5 hours after Shuttle 2 takes off, find
a)the speed of Shuttle 1 and
Shuttle 1 DATA:
rate = r mph ; time = t hrs ; distance = rt miles
---
Shuttle 2 DATA:
rate = r+300 mph ; time = t-(1/2) hrs ; distance = (r+300)(t-(1/2)) miles
---------
Equation:
distance = distance
rt = (r+300)(t-(1/2))
rt = rt -(1/2)r + 300t
(1/2)r = 300t
r = 600t mph
----
b)the distance from the launch pad when shuttle 2 overtakes Shuttle 1
rt = 600t^2 miles

D=RT
D=(R+300)5 SHUTTLE #2'
D=R(5+.5)
(R+300)5=R(5+.5)
5R+1500=R*5.5
5R+1500=5.5R
5R-5.5R=-1500
.5R=-1500
R=-1500/-.5
R=3000 MPH IS THE SPEED OF SHUTTLE #1.
D=3300*5
3000+300=3300 MPH FOR THE SPEED OF SHUTTLE #2.
D=16,500 MILE THEY WILL MEET.
PROOF:
16,500=3000*5.5
16,500=16,500
