Question 723746: A company that makes thing-a-ma-bobs has a start up cost of $30852. It costs the company $1.79 to make each thing-a-ma-bob and the company charges $4.75 for each thing-a-ma-bob. Let represent the number of thing-a-ma-bobs made.
Write the cost function for this company. = c (x) = 30852 + 1.79
Write the revenue function for this company. = r (x) = 4.75x
Write the profit function for this company. = p(x) = r(x) - (c)x = 4.75x - (30852 + 1.79x)
What is the minimum number of thing-a-ma-bobs that the company must pruduce and sell to make a profit? I am having a hard time figuring this last one out..

Just solve your last equation
(1) p = 4.75x - 1.79x - 30852 or
(2) p = 2.96x - 30852
Since you want a positive profit set
(3) p > 0 or
(4) 2.96x - 30852 > 0 or
(5) 2.96x > 30852 or
(6) x > 30852/2.96 or
(7) x > 10423
Let's check this with (1)
Is (4.75*10423 - 1.79*10423 - 30852 > 0)?
Is (49509.25 - 18657.17 - 30852 > 0)?
Is (0.08 > 0}? Yes
Answer: The company must sell at least 10423 thing-a-ma-bobs to make a profit
PS I assume they make/sell a whole thing-a-ma-bob.
