Question 717667: Two vehicles start moving towards each other from cities Y and F with constant speed and they meet 5 hours later. If the distance between two cities is 750 miles, what is the minimum speed of the faster vehicle in miles per hour?
Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
In order to cover 750 miles in 5 hours, the sum of the two vehicles' speeds must be 150 miles per hour. Presuming there is a "faster" vehicle, then the two vehicles cannot be traveling at the same speed and the faster one has to be traveling at more than half of the required 150 mph. The faster vehicle has to be going more than 75 miles per hour. The problem with the question as it is worded is that you cannot exactly specify a "minimum" speed for the faster car. That is because no matter how close to 75 mph that you pick a speed, so long as it is larger than 75, I can find a number even closer that is still larger, and then you could find one closer still...and so on ad infinitum. For example, let's say you claim the minimum speed to be 75.1 mph. Then I claim that it is actually 75.01 mph, to which you respond, "no it is 75.001". We could go on like that forever. Further, you cannot solve the problem by claiming that 75 mph is the minimum speed because that would mean that both vehicles would be going the same speed and there would not be a "faster" vehicle.
