Question 715344: please help me solve this question: if -= d/t, then d=?
v
the line is on top of the V
Answer by KMST(5328) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The v with a line on top is the average velocity. (they use such symbols in Physics and Science classes).
I cannot type that line on top of the v either, so you'll have to imagine it.
is the formula used to calculate the average velocity.
You can "solve for d" to find a formula to calculate the distance covered at a certain average velocity in a certain time.
Multiplying both sides of the equal sign times you get
--> --> or
(or without the optional multiplication middle dot symbol).
It is not rocket science. People who have to drive a certain distance often do those calculations (even if they never took an algebra class).
To find your average velocity, you just take the distance covered (say 1500 miles) divided by the time it took to cover that distance (say 24 hours) and you get an average velocity of 62.5 miles per hour. We averaged a good speed. (It was mostly highway, and the 3 of us took turns driving and sleeping).
To calculate distance covered, you just multiply velocity times distance.
Next time we take the same trip, if I want to figure out how far we will be in a certain time (say 10 hours), I will multiply our average velocity times that time (10 hours) to figure that we would have covered 625 miles in those 10 hours. We would probably be approaching South Bend, Indiana.
