Sarah and her brother Adam live 400 miles apart. They left their homes at the same time and are driving towards one another to meet. Adam is driving at an average speed of 50 miles per hour and Sarah is driving at a speed of 60 miles per hour. What are the approximate distances that Adam and Sarah each will have traveled when they meet?
------------------
The speeds are added when going in opposite directions.
They approach each other at 110 mi/hr
The time to meet is t = d/r
t = 400/110 = 40/11 hours
------------
d = r*t
Adam drives 50*40/11 = 2000/11 miles
Sarah drives 60*40/11 = 2400/11 miles
