Question 70536: A plane took 1 hour longer to travel 560 miles on the first portion of a flight than it took to fly 480 miles on the second portion. If the speed was the same for each portion, what was the flying time for the second portion of the trip?
480/t = 560/t+1
480(t+1) = 560/t
480/t + 560
480/t + 960 = 560t
From here I believe I am lost on how to figure this out, can you help please? Thank you

480/t = 560/t+1 You set this up right!!!! :-)

Cross multiply, or multiply both sides by the LCD: t(t+1) which ever method you prefer. I'm going to multiply both sides by the LCD because it's easier to show you what I'm doing.

hrs.
Happy Calculating!!!

480/t = 560/t+1
480(t+1) = 560/t
--------
Cross multiply to get:
480t = 560(t+1)
480t= 560t +560
-80t=560
t=-70
----------
This doesn't make any sense.
-------------------------
Try this:
1st portion:
distance = 560 miles ; rate = r mph ; time = 560/r hrs.
2nd portion:
distance = 480 miles ; rate = r mph ; time = 480/r hrs.
------------
EQUATION:
longer time - shorter time = 1 hr
560/r - 480/r = 1
Multiply thru by r to get:
560-480=r
r=70 mph.
