question: Barbra's beagle needs to be walked each morning and evening. Barbra and the dog usually walk 3/5 of a mile in 20 minutes each morning and evening. how many miles will Barbra travel in a weeks time. and how many hours will she and the dog spend walking.

The story states that Barbra and her dog travel a distance of 0.6 miles in 20 minutes in the morning and in the evening. We could also say she and her dog travel this same distance in the same amount of time two times a day. Our first question is how many miles she will travel in 1 week's time. Since we know she walks 0.6 miles twice a day (morning and evening), and since there are 7 days in a week, she walks 0.6 x 2 x 7 or 8.4 miles in 1 week. We could also make a table to help us better understand this problem.

Morning + evening 1, 0.6 miles + 0.6 miles = 1.2 miles daily
Morning + evening 2, 0.6 miles + 0.6 miles = 1.2 miles daily
Morning + evening 3, 0.6 miles + 0.6 miles = 1.2 miles daily
Morning + evening 4, 0.6 miles + 0.6 miles = 1.2 miles daily
Morning + evening 5, 0.6 miles + 0.6 miles = 1.2 miles daily
Morning + evening 6, 0.6 miles + 0.6 miles = 1.2 miles daily
Morning + evening 7, 0.6 miles + 0.6 miles = 1.2 miles daily

1.2 + 1.2 + 1.2 + 1.2 + 1.2 + 1.2 + 1.2 = 8.4 miles weekly.

We could also keep it in fraction form. (Use 1/5 for 0.2, 2/5 for 0.4, and 3/5 for 0.6.) Now let's move on to time.

Our second question asks us to find her total time walking in hours. We are given that she walks her dog 20 minutes a day, twice a day, and for seven days a week. That is, 20 x 2 x 7 gives us our weekly time (like 0.6 x 2 x 7 gave us our weekly distance). We get 280 minutes for a week. Since this question asks us to give the answer in hours, we need to convert 280 minutes to hours. We know that there are 60 minutes in an hour, so 280/60 will give us the hours we need. She walked for 4 and 2/3 hours. We could also do a table like we did above.
