I know take a number lets say 50mph divided into 300miles = 6 So is the answer 60 mph correct? how would I figure out the answer to the question by only looking at 300mi in 5hrs?

There are three equations all related, you should memorize all three of them
Find distance
dist = speed * time
written as
d = s * t
or sometimes
d = r * t (for rate)

With these three you should be able to calculate any unknown related to dist, speed and time
