A person sitting in a train which is traveling at 60 km/h finds that another train in the opposite direction takes 8 seconds to pass him.
What is the speed of the second train if it is 140 meters long?
:
Let s = speed of 2nd train
:
the relative speed between the two trains = (s+60)
:
Convert 140 m to .140 km
= time in hrs
Write a time equation, time = dist/speed
:
=
Cross multiply
8(s+60) = .14 * 3600
8s + 480 = 504
8s = 504 - 480
8s = 24
s = 24/8
s = 3 km/hr speed of the 2nd train
