Question 68790: A motor boat traveled 12 miles with the current, turned around, and returned 12 miles against the current to its staring point. The trip with the current took 2 hours and the trip against the current took 3 hours. Find the speed of the boat and the speed of the current.
Answer by checkley71(8403)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
12/2=6 MPH WITH THE CURRENT
12/3=4 MPH AGAINST THE CURRENT
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
To find the boat speed in still water you have to add & subtract the current from these speeds with and against the current.
6-x=4+x
-x-x=4-6
-2x=-2
x=-2/-2
x=1 mph which is the current
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(6-4)/2=1 MPH FOR THE CURRENT. THEREFORE THE SPEED OF THE BOAT IS 6-1=5 & 4+1=5
