Question 685466: A train is leaving in 11 minutes and you are one mile from the station. Assuming you can walk at 4 mph and run at 8 mph, how much time can you afford to walk before you must begin to run in order to catch the train?
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
distance walk = x miles
distance run = 1-x miles
t= d/r
time run + time walk = 11/60 hours
x/4+x/8 = 11/60
(2x+x)/8 = 11/60
60(3x) =8*11
180x=88
x=88/180
distance he needs to walk is 88/180
time walk = (88/180) / 4
=88/180 *1/4
=22/180
=11/90 hours
11/90 * 60
7.3 minutes walk.
