Question 681960: Hello,
I cannot figure out how to set up the equation to solve the following problem;
A plane flew 500 km from Atlanta, GA, to Louisville, KY. When returning to Atlanta, the
flight took ½ hour less time. If the rate to Louisville was 50 km/hr slower than the rate
returning, find the two rates in km/hr.
Thanks in advance,
John

A plane flew 500 km from Atlanta, GA, to Louisville, KY.
When returning to Atlanta, the flight took ½ hour less time.
If the rate to Louisville was 50 km/hr slower than the rate returning, find the two rates in km/hr.
:
s = speed to Louisville
then
s + 50 = speed back to Atlanta
:
Write a time equation; time = dist/speed:
:
To time - return time = 1/2 hr
- = .5

You need an equation for each trip
let = time for GA to KY flight in hrs
= time for KY to GA flight in hrs
Let = rate going from KY to GA in km/hr
= rate going from GA to KY in km/hr
