current speed =y mph
against current 4 hours
with current 3 hours

Distance against 16 miles distance with wind 24 miles
t=d/r against wind -
16 / ( x - y )= 4
4 ( x - y ) = 16
4 x - 4 y = 16 ....................1

24 / ( x y y )= 3
3 ( x + y ) = 24
3 x + 3 y = 24 ...............2
Multiply (1) by 1
Multiply (2) by 1
we get y
4 x + -4 y = 16
3 x + 3 = 24
7 x = 40
/ 7
x = 6 mph

plug value of x in (1) y
4 x -4 y = 16
23 -4 -23 = 16
-4 y = 16
-4 y = -7 mph
y = 2
Rowing speed 6 mph
current speed 2 mph
