Question 670239: Hello, I'm having trouble on this problem. at 10:00am,a car leaves a house at a rate of 60 mph. At the same time, another car leaves the same house at a rate of 50 mph in the opposite direction. At what time will the cars by 330 miles apart?
Answer by DrBeeee(684)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Since they are travelling in opposite directions, it is like one car going at the sum of the two speeds or
(1) d = (r1 + r2)*t or using the values you are given
(2) 330 = (60 + 50)*t or
(3) 330 = 110*t which gives
(4) t = 330/110 or
(5) t = 3
Lets check this value of time by calculating the distance each car travels in 3 hours.
(6) d1 = 60*3 or
(7) d1 = 180 mi
and
(8) d2 = 50*3 or
(9) d2 = 150 mi
Is (d1 + d2 = 330)?
Is (180 + 150 =330)?
Is (330 = 330)? Yes
Answer: The cars will 330 miles apart at 1:00 pm the same day.
