two cars start at the same locations and travel in the same direction at average speeds of 30 miles per hour and 45 miles per hour. How much time must elapse before the two cars are five miles apart?

rate = 30 mph ; time = x hrs ; distance = 30x miles
---------
Faster car DATA:
rate = 45 mph ; time = x hrs ; distance = 45x miles
------
Equation:
fast distance - slow distance = 5 miles
----
45x - 30x = 5 miles
15x = 5 miles
x = 1/3 hour = 20 minutes
