Let x=distance travelled by bus
Then 660-x=distance travelled by car
We'll make use of the formula Distance(d)=rate(r) x time(t) or d=rt
Now we know that the time it took the car (d/r) which was (660-x)/30 plus the time it took the bus (d/r) which was x/60 equals 14 hrs so our equation to solve is:
(660-x)/30+x/60=14 multiply both sides by 60 to get rid of the fractions:
2(660-x)+x=14(60)=840 simplifying:
1320-2x+x=840 collecting like terms:
-x=-1320+840=-480
x=480 miles distance travelled by bus
660-x=660-480=180 miles distance travelled by car
