An easy way is to first find the time required at 50 mph
Let t = time at 50 mph
Then (t+(1/8)) = time at 40 mph

Write a distance equation: dist = speed * time:
Dist there = dist back
50t = 40(t+(1/8))
50t = 40t + 5
50t - 40t = 5
10t = 5
t = 5/10 = 1/2 hr at 50 mph
