Let s = the speed of the slower car
then
(s+8) = speed of the faster

Write a distance equation: dist = time * speed
4s + 4(s+8) = 424
4s + 4s + 32 = 242
8s = 424 - 32
8s = 392
s = 392/8
s = 49 mph is the slower car
then
49+8 = 57 mph is the faster car
