Jolene and Samantha began a trip from the same place at the same time. If Jolene's speed was 40 mph and Samantha's speed was 50 mph, how many hours will it take for Samantha to get 25 miles ahead?
:
Let t = time they are both on the road:
:
Write a distance equation and solve for t: Dist = speed * time:
Sam's dist - Jo's dist = 25
50t - 40t = 25
10t = 25
t = 2.5 hrs
:
Check using distance:
Sam: 50*2.5 = 125
Jos: 40*2.5 = 100
-----------------
difference of 25 mi
:
Not that hard, right? Any questions?
