Question 639372: Rick and Mike are roommates and leave Gainesville on Interstate 75 at the same time to visit their girlfriends for a long weekend. Rick travels north and Mike travels south. If Mike's average speed is 6 mph faster than Rick's, find the speed of each if they are 213 miles apart in 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Rick's speed x mph
Mike's speed = x+ 6 mph
..
They are moving away from each other
So add up their speed.
combined speed = x+ 1 x + 6
( 2 x + 6 )
Time = 1.5 hours
Distance = 213 miles
Distance = speed * time
( 2 x 6 )* 1.5 = 213
3.00 x + 9 = 213
3 x = 213 + -9
3 x = 204
/ 3
x= 68 mph
Rick's speed = 68 mph
Mike's speed = 68 + 6 = 74 mph
