Question 636731: A rod has a weight of 45 pounds attached to one end, a weight of 65 pounds to the other. It balances at a point 8 inches from the middle. How long is it? (Assume that the rod itself is weightless.)
Answer by sachi(548)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let the rod is 2x"
It balances at a point 8 inches from the middle
so the 45 lb is at (x+8)" & 65 lb is at (x-8)"
so 45(x+8)=65(x-8)
or x(65-45)=8*(65+45)=8*110=880
or x=880/20=44
so the length of the rod is 2*44=88" ans
