Answer by josmiceli(19441) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
d = distance between towns
where
= speed of the 1st train in km/hr
= speed of 2nd train in km/hr
= time of travel of 1st train in hrs
= time of travel of 2nd train in hrs
problem says
the towns are 240 km apart

An express train travels 80 kilometers per hour from Ironton to Wildwood. A local train,traveling at 48 kilometers per hour, takes 2 hours longer for the same trip. How far apart are Ironton and Wildwood?
----------------------------
Express Train DATA:
rate = 80 km/hr ; time = x hrs. ; distance = 80x km
---------------
Local train DATA:
rate = 48 km/hr ; time = x+2 hrs ; distance = 48(x+2) km
--------------
EQUATION:
distance = distance
80x=48x+96
32x=96
x=3 hrs.
-------------
Distance = 80(3)=240 km
