Question 631027: If u could please help me set up the equation i am coming out with 2448 seconds which seems to large. The problem is a baseball is thrown striaght upward with an initial speed of 48ft/sec the number of feet s(t) above the ground after (t) seconds is given by s(t)=-16tsquare+48t when will it hitthe ground? The teacher said not to find the vertex thank you very much
Answer by nerdybill(7384) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Given:
s(t)=-16t^2+48t
.
S(t) is zero when it hits the ground -- so, set s(t) to zero and solve for t:
0 = -16t^2+48t
0 = 16t^2-48t
0 = t^2-3t
0 = t(t-3)
.
t = {0, 3}
throw out the 0 (beginning of throw) leaving:
t = 3 seconds
