an airplane can travel at 1000 miles with the wind in the same time it could travel with a distance of 800 miles against the wind. If the wind velocity is 40 mph, what is the speed of the plane?
**
let x=speed of plane in still air
x+40=speed of plane downwind
x-40=speed of plane against the wind
Travel time=distance/speed
1000/(x+40)=800/(x-40)
1000x-40000=800x+32000
200x=72000
2x=720
x=360
speed of plane=360 mph
