Question 612728: A plane X starts at A and flies to B which is a point 900 Km north and 1200 Km west of A. A plane Y starts at C which is 600 Km west of A and flies north. Draw a diagram of this information on a piece of scratch paper.
(a) Where do the flight paths cross?
Km north of A and Km west of A.
(b) Let plane X travel 500Km/hr, then how fast must plane Y fly to crash into plane X assuming that they take off at the same time?
Km/hr

A plane X starts at A and flies to B which is a point 900 Km north and 1200 Km west of A.
A plane Y starts at C which is 600 Km west of A and flies north.
Draw a diagram of this information on a piece of scratch paper.
This will help to understand what we are doing here.
(a) Where do the flight paths cross?
Find the distance from A to B, the hypotenuse (h) of a right triangle
h =
h = 1500 km
These are similar right triangles, the 2nd triangle sides are half the x triangle's sides.
a=600, b=450, c=750
therefore:
Km north of A = 450, and Km west of A = 600
:
(b) Let plane X travel 500Km/hr, then how fast must plane Y fly to crash into plane X assuming that they take off at the same time?
Km/hr
We know how far it will be for plane x to intercept northbound y: 750 km from A
Find the time for A to travel 750 km at 500 km.hr
= 1.5 hrs
:
Find how fast it will take y to go north to this point which is 450 km from C in 1.5 hrs.
= 300 km/hr speed of plane y
