The faster train has to travel from the point when its front is adjactent to the slower train's rear until the faster train's reas is adjactent to the slow train's front.
That's 150 + 160 meters = 310 meters = 0.31 km

The difference in speed is 73 - 42 = 31 km/hr
t = d/r = 0.31/31 = 0.01 hours
= 36 seconds

We will try to understand what is happening without the aid of a diagram.

Consider the scenario of people taking a stroll. Whenever you notice one person passing other people is he/she walking at a faster pace, same pace or slower pace compared to the people passed. It is obvious that he/she is walking at a faster pace/speed at the moment of passing other people. Hence the first observation - If one thing moving at a constant speed is to pass another moving in the same direction, the first should at all times be moving at a speed higher/greater than the speed of the second. In the given instance only the faster train can pass the slower train and not vice-versa.

How long does it take a stroller to pass another ? Probably only a fraction of a second - you hardly notice any time being spent. But imagine yourselves traveling in a car along a road running parallel to a railway track and passing a train traveling in the same direction. If and only if the car is going at a faster speed than the train, you first reach the tail-end of the train and during the next time period start traversing the length of the train at a speed which is equivalent to the difference between your speed and that of the train. It takes a considerable amount of time for you to reach the front of the train before actually passing it. In the given instance the train passing the other has to traverse the length of both the other train and its own length combined before it can pass it. And it is traversing this distance at a speed which is the difference of the speeds of the trains.

Hence it is the train going at 73 km/hr which will pass the other by traversing a distance of (150+160) meters at a speed of (73-42) km/hr i.e. 310/1000 km at speed of 31 km/hr.

Hence the answer is 1/100 th of an hour 3600/100 = 36 seconds.
