Question 605386: a bus and a train leave th esame station at the same time and travel north on parallel paths. the rate of the train is 15 mph less than twice the rate of the bus. at the end of 3 hours the train is 90 farther north than the bus. find the rate of each.
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a bus and a train leave the same station at the same time and travel north on parallel paths.
the rate of the train is 15 mph less than twice the rate of the bus.
at the end of 3 hours the train is 90 miles farther north than the bus.
find the rate of each.
------
Bus DATA:
rate = x mph ; time = 3 hrs ; distance = 3x miles
-----
Train DATA:
rate = 2x-15 ; time = 3 hrs ; distance = 6x-45 miles
--------------------
Equation:
train = bus + 90
6x-45 = 3x + 90
3x = 135
x = 45 mph (bus speed)
2x-15 = 90-15 = 75 mph (train speed)
