Question 602789: A racing team can paddle their canoe 11 miles downstream in the same time it takes to paddle 3 miles upstream in a 2 mile per hour current. How fast can they paddle in still water?
Answer by flame8855(424)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x be the normal speed
c is the speed of the current
speed downstream : x+c
speed upstream : x-c
speed = distance/time
c = 2 mph
speed downstream = distance /time = x+2 = 11/t
t= 11/(x+2)
speed upstream = x-2 = 3/t
t= 3/(x-2)
t=t
so x = 7/2 = 3.5 mph in still water
