Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
300*t+350=400t
350=100t
3.5=t
another way to look at it is that the second plane is gaining 100 mph
350/100 =3.5 hours

Two planes are flying around the world. The first plane is flying at 300 miles per hour (mph) and is 350 miles ahead of the second plane. The second plane is flying at 400 mph. How long will it take for the second plane to catch the first plane?
----------------
1st Plane DATA:
rate = 300mph ; time = x hrs ; distance = d*t = 300x miles
------------------------------
2nd Plane DATA:
rate = 400 mph ; time = x hrs ; distance = d*t = 400x miles
-----
Equation:
2nd plane distance = 1st plane distance + 350 miles
400x = 300x + 350
---
100x = 350
x = 3.5 hrs
