300*t+350=400t
350=100t
3.5=t
another way to look at it is that the second plane is gaining 100 mph
350/100 =3.5 hours

rate = 300mph ; time = x hrs ; distance = d*t = 300x miles

rate = 400 mph ; time = x hrs ; distance = d*t = 400x miles

Equation:
2nd plane distance = 1st plane distance + 350 miles
400x = 300x + 350
---
100x = 350
x = 3.5 hrs
