Question 588744: A train leave Philadelphia at 1:00 pm. It's traveling at 65 mph towards Denver. Another train leaves Denver at 4:00 pm. It's traveling at 60 mph towards Philadelphia. If the distance between the two cities is 1725 miles and the trains are on the same track, when will they crash?
Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
There are at least three possibilities.
1)They won't ever crash because the train conductors are not as ignorant as you or your teachers think.
2)if the times are not local times.
65*(3+x)+60x=1725
x = 306/25=12.24 hours
3)If the times are local then you have to adjust since Denver and Philadelphia are two hours apart.
So add two hours to Denver to get equivalent Philadelphia time so there is only an hour difference now
65*(1+x)+60x=1725
x = 332/25=13.28 hours
