Question 588294: Two cars leave town at the same time going in the same direction. One travels at 30 mph and the other travels at 46 mph. In how many hours will they be 72 mi apart? I know the answer is 4.5 hours. ( the book provides the answers) I just can't figure out how they got their answer.

for every hour they travel, the faster car's lead increases by 16 miles (46 - 30)

it will have a 72 mi lead after 4.5 hr ___ 72 / 16 = 4.5
