Question 58087: Two trains leave Kansas City at the same time. One train travels east and the other one travels west. The speed of the westbound tain is 5 mph greater then the speed of the eastbound train. After 6 hours, they are 510 miles apart. Find the rate of each train. Assume the trains travel in a straight line in opposite directions.
Okay that was a long one, thanks a bunch to all of you!
Answer by 303795(602) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
As the two trains are 510 miles apart after 6 hours they have a combined speed of 510/6=85 miles per hour.
If the slower train has a speed of x then the second train has a speed of x+5 so
2x+5=85
2x=80
x=40.
So one train is travelling at 40 miles per hour and the second train is travelling at 45 miles per hour.
