Question 579470: John can build a fence in 5 days. John worked alone for 1 day and then worked with David for 3 days at which time they finished the fence. How long would it take for David to build the fence alone? Is the answer 15 days? Thanks, Mike
Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
On the day alone, John built 1/5 of the fence leaving 4/5 to finish
in three more days john will do 3/5 of the fence.
which will leave 1/5 for David to do in 3 days.
3/5+3/x=4/5
subtract 3/5
3/x=1/5
so yes x=15
