time taken by first + time taken by second train = total time taken
time taken = distane /speed
(240/55) + (240/45) = 9.7 hours

It depends on what you mean by "total distance."
Also, how far apart are they at the start?

If you mean when they'll be 240 miles apart and start from the same point:
The speeds are added when going in opposite directions
55 + 45 = 100 mi/hr
----
d = r*t
t = d/r = 240/100
t = 2.4 hours.
