Traveling with the current a certain boat went 12 mph. Against the same current it only went 2mph. Find the speed of the boat in still water and the speed of the current.
:
Let s = speed of boat in still water
Let c = rate of the current
:
A simple equation for each scenario
:
s + c = 12
s - c = 2
-------------additions eliminates c, find s:
2s = 14
s = 7 mph is the boat in still water
;
You should be able to find the rate of the current
