A ship must average 22 knots (nautical miles per hour) to make its 10-hour run on schedule. During the first four hours bad weather caused it to reduce speed to 16 knots. What should its average speed be for the rest of the trip to maintain its schedule?
The formula for distance is , where d=distance, r=rate, and t=time
The distance that would have been traveled is: 22*10=220 mi
The distance traveled in the first 4 hours is: 16*4=64 mi
The distance left to travel is: r*6= 6r mi
:
64+6r=220
-64+64+6r=220-64
6r=156
6r/6=156/6
r=26 nautical miles per hour
Happy Calculating!!!
Answer by checkley71(8403) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
16*4+X*6=22*10
64+6X=220
6X=220-64
6X=156
X=156/6
X=26 KNOTS FOR THE LAST 6 HOURS TO AVERAGE 22 KNOTS FOR THE ENTIRE TRI8P
PROOF
16*4+(26*6)=22*10
64+156=220
220=220
