How far can Phelps swim upstream at 8 km/hr and still return downstream at 12 km/hr in a total time of 4 hours?
:
Let d = one-way distance
write a time equation, time = dist/speed
:
time up = time down = 4 hrs
+ = 4
multiply by 24 to clear the denominators, resutls
3d + 2d = 24(4)
5d = 96
d =
d = 19.2 km,
:
:
Check this by finding the actual time each way
19.2/8 = 2.4 hrs
19.2/12= 1.6
--------------
total; 4 hrs
