Tanner Jones and Sheldon Furst received walkie-talkies for Christmas.
If they leave from the same point at the same time, Tanner walking north at 2.5 mph and Sheldon walking east at 3 mph, how long will they be able to talk to each other if the range of the walkie-talkies is 4 miles?
:
Let t = walking time of the two boys to reach max range
:
2.5t = dist walked by T
3t = dist walked S
:
This scenario forms a right triangle where distance between the boys is the hypotenuse
Using pythag: a^2 + b^2 = c^2
:
6.25t^2 + 9t^2 = 16
15.25t^2 = 16
t^2 =
t^2 = 1.0492
t =
t = 1.0243 hrs walking time for max range of the walkie-talkies
Then
2.5 * 1.0243 = 2.56 mi, T's walking dist for max range
and
3 * 1.0243 = 3.073 mi, S's walking dist

Check this on your calc enter results: 3.9996 ~ 4 mi
