Question 560697: Five friends drove at an average rate of 50 miles per hour to a weekend retreat. On the way home they took the same route but averaged 70 miles per hour. What was the distance between home and the retreat if the round trip took 10 hours?
Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
d = rt
d = 50t1
t1 = d/50
----------------
d = rt
d = 70t2
t2 = d/70

---------------

t1 + t2 = 10

d/50 + d/70 = 10

7d + 5d = 3500

12d = 3500

d = 3500/12

d = 291.667

So the distance is roughly 291.667 miles
