Question 557203: Tom and Jeri are playing with two remote control cars on a straight track. Tom's car goes 2 feet in one second. Jeri's car travels 8 feet every 3 seconds. Tom and Jeri start their cars at the same time on opposite ends of the track towards each other. If the track is 70 feet long, how many seconds will it take for the cars to collide?

Tom and Jeri are playing with two remote control cars on a straight track.
Tom's car goes 2 feet in one second.
Jeri's car travels 8 feet every 3 seconds.
Tom and Jeri start their cars at the same time on opposite ends of the track towards each other.
If the track is 70 feet long, how many seconds will it take for the cars to collide?
:
Tom's car speed: 2 ft/sec
Speed of Jeri's car = ft/sec
:
Let t = time in seconds for the two cars to collide
;
Write a distance equation: dist = speed * time
2t + t = 70
multiply thru by 3 to get rid of the denominator, results
6t + 8t = 3(70)
14t = 210
t =
t = 15 sec for them to meet
;
:
Check this
15*2 = 30 ft
15*(8/3) = 40 ft
---------------
total dist 70 ft
