Question 542345: Sam travels from Baltimore to Boston each year. It takes him 10 hours to get to Boston. He stops 3 times, for an hour each time.If he only stopped once, is it reasonable to say that he could get there in 6 hours??
Answer by neatmath(302)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

No, it would not be reasonable (unless he was REALLY speeding).

On his normal trip, it is easy to see that for every 10 hours of "trip" time, he is only "driving" for 7 of those hours.

The other 3 hours are "break" hours.

So the actual driving time is 7 hours.

In the second scenario, his total "trip" time is 6 hours.

He is only driving for 5 of those hours.

The other 1 hour is a "break" hour.

Since the actual "driving" time to Boston is 7 hours,

he would be 2 hours short on "driving" time in the second scenario where he only stopped once.

This is a good and tricky question.

I hope this helps!
