D=RT. The distance Jack has to make up is 60 miles.


The rate at which Jack closes the distance is the difference in their speeds. 60-40=20mph. That's the rate at which Jack is closing that distance.


60 = 20t divide both sides by 20: 60/20=t=3 hours.
